If I was treating myself, for tax purposes, as a U.S. resident for the entire year, then would this mean that the "book" value would be that as of Jan 1st or the date I entered the U.S. AND are there any links to which you could direct me that re-iterate this topic (or is it a well-kept se...

For the sake of argument, let's say the book value of my RRSP was $5000 when I moved in to the U.S. (in 2007) and I withdrew $500 prior to year-end.
Line 7a - $500
Line 7b - 0 (because the withdrawal is tax-free?)
Line 8 - $4500
And any future withdrawals up to the $5000 are tax free.

Or am I wrong

When you are saying the author of this post is NOT a non-resident for 2007, then the following info on the CRA website applies only to years following the departing year?? [quote][b]After you leave Canada After you leave Canada, you're a non-resident for tax purposes provided you have severed reside...

As an emigrant (to the US) in 2007, I have included the unpaid HBP amount in my income for the year on my Cdn Tax Return. The result is tax owing, which, of course, I will pay when I submit my return. And in effect, then I can take a foreign tax deduction against my 2008 US tax return?

Foreign Tax Credit

By Form 2555, I excluded my 2007 earned income AND by Form 1116 I took a credit for taxes paid out on my RRSP withdrawal and Unemployment compensation. If, on filing my Canadian taxes, I still end up owing, can I also claim that as a credit on my U.S. taxes and, if so, where would this be reflected.

U-File

I put in my Ontario address and then my departure date, however, when I look at the summary page, I don't see any Ontario Tax calcuated on line 428, however, I do see that the Federal Tax calculated on line 406 is higher than when I did it "by hand". Does U-File incorporate the two? PS - I...

Since I received mis-information from the IRS, I had submitted the form and designated myself an Annuitant (I did make an election to defer). I suppose now I will wait until the assessment is returned and see the result. Do you suggest that I make an amendment to the tax year in question or just cha...

Form 8891 - Beneficiary & Annuitant

I'm looking for some clarification on the definition of these two status options. What I'm getting from the IRS is just about as clear as mud to me.
Thanks
