His family is still in Canada. Is he a resident or non-resident for tax purpose in the US for 2010 and 2011?

Is US per diem rate tax-free in Canada?
My friend just got a temporal job offer in the US on a per diem contract. He is going to be away from home for one year. Is the per diem money also considered tax-free in Canada?

US resident,CAN non-resident with salary income from Canada
We are Canadian non-resident and US resident. My wife has some salary income from a Canadian company this year. The company will probably issue her a T4 next year, not sure whether it will be a T4 or something else. We file MFJ in the US. How should we file tax return for 2009?

I don't need to file form 1116 since it is a passive income. Right?
