Green card holders bringing a parent to USA

Is there any way for green card holders to bring an elderly parent to the US as a dependent? My mother in law is soon to be a widow and she’s not really capable of living on her own. We just recently became US permanent residents, so US citizenship is still a few years away. Is there any way we ca...

Thanks nelsona. When I resubmit the TD for last year, should I include only the accounts that were missed or also include the one that I did declare?

Meant to say FinCen Form 114 not Form 112. Not sure where I got the 112 from.

Thanks!

Foreign Account Reporting Confusion

Moved to the US in early 2012. Retained a total of 3 Canadian bank accounts when I moved here, one with a balance of around $52K, the others next to nothing (one has $2.16 and the other fluctuated throughout the year, usually no more than $300-400 balance) & were primarily used for paying credit...

Non-Resident Tax Return for Canada

Wife & I have lived in the US since March 2012. We spent all of 2013 living in the US and I was expecting to file only US returns this year, but she just received a T4 from Canada for around $1,000 in income. She did not actually work during 2013 & this appears to have been maternity leave b...

Not sure if anyone is still reading this forum, but I walked across at San Ysidro on the weekend. Only had to spend about 30 seconds in Mexico before I was back in line for US customs. Took about 2 hours in total but I didn't have any problems.

I would use the San Ysidro crossing if that makes any difference.

Thanks.

I-94 Issues

Canadians living in the US, I'm H1B status and dependants are H4 -- we went back to Canada for Christmas. On our way back, DHS border agent discovers that my passport will expire before my I-94. We get hauled inside and all of our I-94's replaced with one that expires on the same day as my passport,...

I was using software. My kid is a Canadian citizen and didn't have an ITIN yet, so I left the SSN field empty, which resulted in the software not including the credit.

Thanks nelsona! I just filed my 1040X to get the $1,000 IRS credit but it looks like everything on the Canadian side is already correct.

Tax credit for dependant child

Is there any sort of tax credit on a Canadian return for a dependent child when the child lives with two parents? Based on what I'm reading, we can not claim the credit on line 305 since we are a married couple... is that correct? If so, is there any other credit I could claim?? This is our first ye...

Moving Expense Deduction

Moved from Canada to USA last year. Should I have been able to include my moving expenses on my CDN tax return? I did so, but it looks like they were disallowed... I thought it would be allowed since the move was to be closer to a new job? Or is it completely disallowed since my residency status cha...

Taxpoor: chill out. nelsona has been an immense help to countless people and can run circles around most so-called "tax pro's". Give the man some respect... he has certainly earned it.

It says $10,822. Cursed TurboTax!

Fortunately my Canadian net income was only $1,955, so I don't think I have too much to worry about :)

Ah ok makes sense, thanks nelsona!

BTW -- I did use TurboTax and specified a departure date of 3/1/2012.
