Odd call from CRA
So I had an odd call from the CRA today. I filed a departure return this year with 3 months of Canadian income only. The lady on the phone wanted to know my world income including US income. I asked why.. I thought I didn't need to report that since I'm a non-resident. She said yes you're a non ...

TurboTax Messed Up - Need to file Amended Return
So it seems that TurboTax didn't incluide the deduction for my dependant. I left the SSN blank since she was applying for an ITIN, and it looks like TurboTax didn't calculate the deduction. I reviewed my return later & punched in a fake number in TurboTax... low & behold I now owe $1,000 less tax ...

I ended up taking a trip down to the IRS Taxpayer Assistance Center. They were able to process the ITIN apps for my wife & kid without sending their passports away.

Thanks again! So now I'm filling out the W-7 to get ITINs for my wife & kid. The IRS website says they now require "certified" copies of identification from the issuing agency. Is this for real? Do I really need to go to a Canadian consulate and get certified copies from them? It says alternately we ...

First tax year in the USA
I moved to the US last March on H1B. My wife and daughter are both H4. We both had income in Canada during the first 3 months of 2012, so I've filed non-resident returns to Canada. I'm now trying to get my US taxes done but am not sure how to handle my Canadian income. I went to a "tax expert ...

So which category would an IT Manager fit under? I've worked in the US under TN as a technical worker, but never as a manager. Everything I've ever read stated that managers do NOT qualify for TN and must get an H1B. The closest thing to a manager listed on that page is a "Management Consultant" and ...

TN for Canadian IT Manager?
I just interviewed for a co. and they thought they could get me a "nafta visa" for an IT Management position. I told them I didn't think that was the case, but they were insistent.
Is it possible to work as an IT Manager (managing people) on TN?

Canadian moving to US -- keep CDN house as rental property?
I'm considering moving back to the US again on another H1B in the near future. I'm thinking about keeping my house in Canada and renting it out. I recall previously that a lot of people thought this was a bad idea as it could make me deemed a tax resident in Canada.
Is this still the case? I've ...

K3 Visa Processing Time
Hello,
A co-worker of mine was a refugee claimant to Canada from El Salvador, but her application was denied. She is married to a US citizen, but was in the US illegally at the time of the marriage.
Apparently she now has to return to El Salvador and wait for approval of a K3 visa before she can ...

GC in a down economy?
Is anyone having any luck getting employment-based green cards given the current high unemployment in the US? I can't imagine the case that could be made for no minimally-qualified American workers being available with over 9% unemployment (and much higher in many areas).
