Thanks a lot, Nelsona.
Being quite occupied by other stuff, I sent the return to a regional CRA office without checking your reply.

Dose it have adverse impact?
Hopefully the regional office knows how to handle it.
Is there anything I can do now?

Thanks.

Thanks a lot, Nelsona.
That's a wonderful approach.

I guess the letter and the check needs to be sent to the same CRA office
as my T1 return, but not the International Tax Services,
since I am not an NR for 2006, right?

Thanks again for your consistent help.

Interest earned while being NR to Canada

Sorry if this topic has been discussed before.
I just need a quick confirm for my case.

I earned some interest from Canada after I moved to the US.
But somehow there was no tax withholding on it.

Is it possible for me to write a check at 10% as tax withholding to CRA,
and do not include the whole ...

Thanks a lot as always, Nelsona.

I have this feeling for quite a while, whenever unexpected things happen,
usually the basic principles were not followed properly.
I guess that's exactly my situation.

The reason I got NR return was that when I tried with ufile.ca,
I provided [Non-Resident] for ...

Do I have to file return to Quebec as non-resident of Canada

Hello all

I tried using ufile.ca to prepare my non-resident Canadian return.
But I did not find any forms for Quebec after I provided my status info.
Is this normal?

Please confirm with this.
Thanks in advance.

Thanks a lot Nelsona for keeping advising me on the topic.
I found out the more I disccussed, the closer I get to know the principles
behind these tax regulations, (IRS and CRA).

I really appreciate your expertise and the willingness to share and help.
All the best.

Sorry to revisit this topic.
But I think I would bring up a valuable discussion about how to deal with
the interest obtained from Canada.

Many people moved down to US in the middle of a year.
Before the move, he/she would get some interest from Canadian bank,
where no tax withholding happened ...

Thanks a lot for your detailed explanantion.
I guess for my case, I have to use FTC to cover that part.

Thanks a lot, Nelsona for the reply.
But my confusion is still there.

(Suppose I claim FEIE for my Canadian wages for IRS filing.)
For my case, I got interest from Canadain bank before and after
I came to the US.

Should I report the interest to IRS in 1116?
Since there is not tax withholding on it ...

Can interest from Canada be excluded using 2555?

Hi All

I will use 1040 to file my 2006 return.
Can I use 2555 to exclude interest income from Canada?
The interest had no tax withholding from Canada bank.

If not, I still need to report to both CRA and IRS.
It looks that leads to double taxation, right?

Please clarify for me.
Thanks in advance ...

Thanks a lot, Nelsona for staying with me on this matter.
I think I got it now:
- I did get a NR4 form, which had 420 interest and 42 withholding.
For this one, no need to report to CRA, only to IRS and use 1116 to get FTC.

- I also got another NR4 form for interest, which did not have any ...

Thanks a lot Nelsona.
If I understand you correctly, for any NR4 forms with withholding, no need to report to CRA. (it's just souvenir from CRA, :).

Does the same rule apply to stock option exercise?
I had federal and provincial withholding on it. And it occured after departure.

As for US return ...

Is ufile.ca good enough to handle emigrant from Quebec?

Hi All

Anyone has experience to use ufile.ca to file exit return for CRA?
I got two NR4 files and found nowhere to put them.

Any other tips for using it in this case?

Thanks in advance.
