I know I am reviving an old post, but I wanted to warn the OP about "seperating" the two applications.
I know technically it should not make a difference - you already have all the paperwork, so you can just file in your wife's application without going through the lawyer (and really, I am not sure ...

Update
I did talk to my colleague about it - casually asked if the lawyer had okayed her working on in Canada. He said that she has actually got a TN now from her Canadian co - they have a US presence, so its all legit.
