Replacement for Grasmick board?

Looks like Joe's board is down for the count. Does anyone know if there are any other good immigration boards around serving as a replacement?

Thanks.

Wife in US on H4, working in Canada during the summer

My wife has been living in the US on H4 since May 2004. We have been filing as US tax residents, and she is going to Canada this summer to work for 2 - 3 months. For our next tax return, if I'm not mistaken, we just add her income as foreign income, including taxes paid as foreign tax credits. Does ...

Thanks for confirming that, Nelson. She would probably stay with her mother or with friends... definitely not strong residential ties.

Canadian in US on H4 going back to Canada for summer job

I am a Canadian, living and working in the US on H1B since March 2004. My wife is in H4 status and going to college. My wife would like to go back to Canada to work over the summer. How will this impact our 2006 tax return? I'm thinking the following: -We continue to file as US tax residents, declar...

Avoiding CDN Tax Residency on F1

I'm currently H1B and my wife is H4. She would like to convert to an F1 to take get some work experience, but I'd like to avoid becoming a CDN tax resident. Is it possible to have her become an F1 and still maintain tax residency in the US, or would we be hooped? Thanks. (Also, does anyone know if i...

I just read the thread RE: Form 8891 and I'm assuming this is the form that needs to be filled out. Am I also correct in assuming that the H&R Block guy was likely unaware of this form and that there is no $10,000 excemption (i.e. all RRSP's regardless of size need to be declared?)

Thanks.

Reporting RRSP's under $10,000

My wife has RRSP's in Canada. This is our first year filing taxes in the US and I understand that they need to be declared on some form. I paid an H&R Block office to prepare my taxes for me and told them about the RRSP's... the guy said they didn't need to be declared because they were less tha...

I didn't realize I could do that... my understanding was always that as long as I still had substantial ties to Canada (i.e. my wife was still living there) I was considered a tax resident. We did always intent on her moving down. We sold our home in Dec '03 and rented a suite until she moved down. ...

Thanks again for the info nelsona... if I choose March 1st as my departure date, would I still have to include the March, April & May US income on my CDN taxes? If so, what would be the benefit of claiming an earlier departure date?

Thanks for the info... I know many other workers also pay into non-ss pension plans, but is it common to only pay into a private pension fund, with absolutley no participation in social security?

Payment into Pension Plan deductible?

I picked up a copy of QuickTax 2004 and am doing my CDN taxes. I became a non-resident for tax purposes on June 1st 2004 (thats the day my wife came down to join me), but started work in the US on March 1st. During the 3 months that I worked in the USA while she was in Canada, I paid into a pension ...

I just called my banker to tear her a new butt-hole... of course she feigned ignorance and said the computer figures it all out automatically and she can't do anything about it. I love how "the computer" is always the scape goat. Far be it for anyone to every think for themselves. Groan, g...

Not a whole lot, actually. I took a pay cut to come down here because the job was too good to pass up, and the opportunity to live in the US was worth it. Plus, how can they justify charging me extra when the bank screwed up? I specifically told them I was living in the US -- they even have my US ma...
