Sorry Turncoat, I didn't mean climate change like the icecaps turning everything into the ocean but rather a political one. Maybe terrorists will start wiping entire nations out or we'll have WWIII or whatever, that kind of thing :)

Though quite unfamiliar with the tax problems you're going through (I can imagine!), unless you're really old or you just bought your dream house in Canada and would never, ever consider leaving it, I would personally put up with the difficulty each year for the flexibility of being a dual citizen. ...

Thanks, all. I posted in the TN thread but it isn't necessarily on topic with this one. I received a cash gift from a Canadian person (not a trust) for less than $100k in 2006 and did not file the 3520. I know it's not taxable, but IRS still requires this to be filed if it's more than $10k or if it'...

Helpful as always. More specifically, do I need to make 4 X $10,500 transfers, or since my wife and I are married, can I do 2 X $21k? I've found slightly differing wording on various websites. Also, the bank account here is in both of our names, though I guess a wire transfer has a sender's single n...

Sorry to post again, but editing is not possible and it's still on topic for the thread :) Most links are saying that in 1996 a law was enacted to require on form 3520 reporting of a gift from a foreign person to a US person if that amount went above $10k, even if it's not taxable, otherwise major, ...
Threr wil be no tax on your gift. IRS likes to make sure that they know where your off-shore money is coming from.
Is there even a need to report the gift, then?

Cash gift to Canada.

1) Hi! Kind of a reverse of a post from a few months ago, but I need to give about $42k USD to my parents in Canada. Obviously, it's incumbent I avoid any tax issues with this. I planned on giving $10.5k to my father, $10.5k to my mother, and then having my wife give $10.5k to my father and $10.5k t...

I keep getting emails telling me this topic has been updated, but when I click the link it tells me the topic doesn't exist. Further, there are no responses visible here. In any case, having gone to toronto a few times now, I'm under the impression that Lewiston is a great place to go when entering ...

An interesting, if terribly written article. Where is the dissent? Did the author even interview anybody besides immigration lawyers? Who can say that the number of business-class immigrants coming to Canada has dropped because of processing times and not because of other factors? Maybe their countr...

Thanks, Nelson. Helpful as always. My birth cert is for England. The only CAN identification I have is the expired passport and CAN citizenship card, both with the new passport app, plus a really old expired CAN passport still in my possession. I have a SIN card and an expired provincial healthcare ...

Glad it's working out for you and, as with so many things in life, it's a few naughty people who ruin and make far more difficult the process for everyone else.

Any problem using a new country's passport?

I'm in the US as a permanent resident and I've only ever used my Canadian passport to go in and out. I also used photocopies of it to support my green card app a couple years back. My CAN Passport is being renewed and I'd like to leave for a couple of days. Is it perfectly ok to use my UK passport t...

Which border crossing at Buffalo for an expeditious crossing

Now that we're living in Rochester, NY, we're hoping to make trips to Southern Ontario a frequent occurrence. Which of the four border crossings is the best for a quick transit? Some friends visited today and crossed the border at lunch time (Saturday) from Canada and found the wait into the US abou...
