Strategies for avoiding hefty US estate tax?
Apologies if this has already been discussed (I didn't find anything in over 1 hour of looking) and hello to Nelsona and the rest of the gang here -- it's been a while ;). My parents are Canadian citizens / residents who own a condo in Florida and they've recently become aware of the heavy tax penal...

Great reply as always Nelson. How much does filing an NR5 help? It sounds like this can't eliminate all withholding (or the 217 would be unnecessary). For someone with practically no world income, what would the withholding be reduced to (from 25%)? And you're 100% correct on the interest income -- ...

How to file 217 election?
Hi all. My wife took 8K out of her RRSP last fall and now I want to get back the 25% tax that she paid (she had zero world income last year). This appears to be the 217 form: http://www.cra-arc.gc.ca/E/pbg/tf/5013-sc/5013-sc-05e.pdf, however, am I right that I also have to file the general T1 for no...

RRSP withdrawals for 0 income spouse in US
Could someone point me to the threads where this was discussed -- I've been unable to find them so far. What I'm looking for is the info on how a spouse with zero (or really low) income can withdraw funds from his/her RRSP and pay no tax as long as the amount is below some threshold (about 8K if I r...

residency split between VA and TX
Hey all -- hopefully a quick question here... I worked in VA up to 01/15/04 last year. I became resident in TX on 03/15/04 and I've been living/working here since then. As far as I know, none of this should affect my federal return, apart from needing to include eligible moving expenses and the fact...
