Re: TN/TD Visa Closer connection exception
The fact that you reside in California makes you a CDn non-resident, plain and simple. Where you and spouse reside overrides any financial ties in other countries.
File a departure return for 2024, and a full year 1040 and california return.

No. Physically moving and occupying a home in Ontario (which must be done before applying for OHIP in any case) establishes residency.

... and if you don't own a house in Canada right away, and there is some Cap gains arising from the sale you can elect , when you sell the US home (assuming you don't rent it) , to treat it as your Principal Residence for the period from your return to Canada until the sale date.

Re: Canadian plan to move back to Canada after years working on TN
When you re-establish CDn tax residency, all your investments are deemed sold and repurchased that day, so if you do not sell before returning, you would only be on the hook for any gains from your arrival date until you sold, so not very much, if at all (since you would subtract your selling costs ...

Re: IRA Transfer to RRSP - CRA Help line is No Help
The above are the rules for those worked AND Lived in US. I see by another post that you may have been a commuter, in which case the rules are indeed different. You might be stuck with what CRA dictates to you, but realize you will get a third -- different -- answer the next time you call. A better ...

Re: IRA Transfer to RRSP - CRA Help line is No Help
I think you can forget about getting a good answer from CRA telephlunkies. Yes, you can transfer ALL the IRA (gross amount before tax), and yes, you will treat all of it as a transfer, not affecting your RRSP contribution room. However, you do need to report the income on the pension line, and then ...

I would NOT split the return and the check. Send it all to Winnipeg. Nothing to do with Sudbury. Not sure where you got that idea.

Re: Looks like the bank forgot to withhold 25%
Well, since you are familiar with the 217 process, you can skip the letter to CRA (International office in Winnipeg). Just do your 217 return, with schedule A,B,C and figure your tax owing. Don't forget to include your medical expenses including premium, from you and if applicable, your spouse, as a...

Re: Help needed for Roth/HSA with Cross-Border Tax Residency
For in-plan conversions, you had best check with your administrator, as this is certainly not a universally available option for 401(k) plans.
Again, though, I would not suggest you do this until you are a Cdn non-resident.

Re: Help needed for Roth/HSA with Cross-Border Tax Residency
I would avoid roth401(k) until you move to US. Sick to 401(k)Btw, you cannot do a "backdoor" Roth401(K) contribution. That is only for Roth IRAs. Maxing your HSA (assuming you have a high deductible Medical plan, is good, but realize that for the most benefit is should be used strictly for...
