Hi,

I know that this topic has been thoroughly covered, but I have one simple question.

If I have an RRSP full of stip bonds and stocks that have not been sold (ie. no dividends or capital gains yet), do I have to do any of this? Do I only have to do this in years that I sell stock?

I didn't know about this. So, even though the *value* of the strip bond increases each year (as shown on my regular statements), I don't have to pay any tax on this increase until the bond is cashed out (ie. I don't have to pay capital gains)?

Taxes on Canadian Government Strip Bonds

Hi, I have a Government of Canada strip bond expiring in 2008. I bought it last year. Do you have to report anything on my US tax return this year?

Part of the reason why I want to buy a Canadian REIT is that I want to put my money in Canadian dollars to buffer myself from a possible decline of the US dollar, since I may move back to Canada some day. In regards to Foreign Tax Credit, from what I understand if I fill out a Form 1116 then I shoul...

Canadian REITs

Hi, I am considering buying a Canadian REIT through my US TD Waterhouse account (as canadian non-resident), but I am somewhat confused by the tax implications. I called TD Waterhouse and they told me that they will withold 15% of the dividend. This is the first thing I'm confused about because accor...

In regards to the REITS, does this mean that 25% (or less) of my income will be withheld by the brokerage at which I purchased the REIT each month? Or is this something I'll have to do myself?

Also, will I be able to get this 25% refunded on my American tax return at the end of the year?

Where is Foreign Interest Income Taxed?

If I have a canadian strip bond and I live in the US (as a canadian non-resident), do I have to fill out a tax form in Canada to report the Canadian interest (in addition to US tax form). Or can I just report it on the US tax form? Conversely, if I have a US Certificate of Deposit and I now live in ...

I'm unable to find the website that you suggested. Could you tell me how to navigate to this website?

Also, just to clarify, the tax return we fill on for Canada would only be for the rental income, correct?

Getting Married to US Citizen and buying property

My fiance and I plan on getting married this year. We both live in the US. I'm a Canadian non-resident, and she's American. We want to buy a rental property up in Canada as an investment. If we are married, will be both have to file Canadian tax returns for the rental income we get on the condo, or ...
