Thanks nelsona. His did get a 15% raise with the move + of course, the exchange rate. His W-2 will be for his full salary. I don't think he wants to stir the pot here as he prefers to work out of Windsor but the company is slowly transitioning all it's employees over to the US. I do not think they w...

From a one commuter to a two commuter household

For the past few years, attempting to use Article XXV has not benefited me as a commuter, mostly due to my husband's childcare costs deduction ($14k) from income in Canada but not in the US. However, my husband's job just got relocated to the US. He currently only commutes 2 days a week with the res...

Thanks nelson.

A USC would include government match (RESP) + any interest or dividend income then. How would one deal with capital gains if you cashed out a portion of a TFSA?

I'm beginning to think it could be feasible to a lower tax rate with the NR in several cases after all.

On a pro forma 1040, do RESPs & TFSAs need to be considered?

They certainly are not on a regular 1040NR right?

These are good examples nelson. I both of our cases we would be closer to your 1st example than to the second. When I ran the numbers in Turbo Tax it seemed the tax rates were very close in our case (I included CAD taxes paid, mortgage interest & taxes) but I'm still not 100% sure I'm doing this...

I was fairly certain but she never did show me both methods so I can't be sure. I did try running them both ways using the information I've learned here (sort of quickly mind you) & I came up with very similar tax rates using both the pro forma & 1040NR. A friend of mine goes to the same tax...

Thanks a lot for this nelson. I'll have another look tonight. A quick glance at including his taxes on Schedule A seemed to drop the tax rate down but not sure if it's enough yet. I will deduct what he expects to get back this year from his taxes paid in Canada & put on schedule A & include ...

For my husband's Canadian income & taxes paid, I put all his information into a mock W-2 in TurboTax so no, his taxes paid would not have appeared in schedule A (CPP & EI went into SS tax & medicare tax withheld boxes of mock W-2) . I did include the taxes he paid (subtracting the amount...

I did a quick run of the numbers in TurboTax & it does appear that 1040NR is more beneficial for me this year than a pro forma 1040. My husband is taking a $14k deduction on his income for child care in Canada that would be considered taxable income in the US. Perhaps this could be part of it. A...

[quote="nelsona"]You *should* be able to get whatever you don't get from child tax credit, by claiming the additional child tax credit. In any event, even if she forgot "only $100" that probably means that your taxes weren't done correctly. Now, she may have felt that saving mone...

Yes sorry, I meant wait for my cheque to clear. :)

I used the child tax credit worksheet - line 48 on 1040NR instructions & came up with $100. My income (line 37) was around $93k. I'll double check it tonight? Are you saying it's a straight $1000 per child, even when filing NR?

[quote="nelsona"]It is significant that he lost you the $1900. I am convinced you are dealing with the worst case in your "preparer": too little knowledge and too much laziness. You have used proforma in the past. Use nanic's suggestion and do your own. You can fix this. And then...

By my calculations, the child tax credit (line 48) amounted to $100. Not significant, but something.
