p.s.
As it turns out, I contacted CIBC and learned that this is a non-redeemable GIC that cannot be cashed until Feb 2010!! So much for solving my financial woes.

Thanks for the tip but if I had the money to spend on professional services, I wouldn't need to cash out. Besides, after reading his immigration related posts for 10 years, I'd rather get Nelson's spin on it first. And back to that...I do a 1040x with 8891 for each of the six years and I should be g...

yet another rrsp ?
I know that the RRSP deferral issue has been vastly covered and I have tried to read and understand it. My inability to do so is just another indication of my total financial illiteracy. Here is another example...I moved to the US in 1998 and have been here ever since. I have an RRSP (CIBC GIC) with...

Okay. So now it makes sense. The AP will stay in my pocket from here on out. Here is the source of my confusion. The attorney on my case was on maternity leave. As the approvals came in, they sent them to me with a cover letter explaining what i was to do with them. The firm's owner signed off on th...

border confusion
FOr the first time in 9 years of crossing, I had a problem. I went through Pearson PFI on Monday and had in hand my newly minted Canadian Passport, my approval notice for my H1B extension (8th year and the 7th had expired while I was in Canada) and my AP approval. I showed all of this to the officer...

Thanks. If I wanted to do consulting on the side, I assume I could use the EAD and, from what you said, I would be using that for my current job as well (the one status at a time rule). Does the H1B die at that point or could I resume using it when the side job ended? I cannot wait until I do not ne...

safe move or overkill?
My H1-B status expires in December (7th year) and I have a pending I-140. We submitted I-129 to extend H1-B in early July (we asked for 3 years but will likely only get one unless I140 is miraculously approved now). We are submitting I-485 and I-131 this week. My attorney suggests that we submit I-7...

I guess my question was where in the pile my 485 would be...would it be put with those that were submitted in February (when my I140 was submitted) or at the end of the line. It doesn't really matter...it feeds my obsessive monitoring of processing dates and online updates. Hopefully my 140 will be ...

Thanks Nelson. I am on H1B (7th year) and will likely forego the EAD/AP route. Would the RD for my I485 be the date it was received or would it be treated as though it were submitted with the I140? I don't mind waiting for my green card so long as I can stay in status in the interim without much ado.

My priority date is November 2003 (EB3) so, with the June Visa Bulletin showing gargantuan leaps in my category, it is current. My I140 receipt date is February 27, 2007. I really do not want to pay for premium processing (two tiered government services just do not sit right with me) but I need some...

I made my annual trip home last week. My 6th year of H1B expired while I was there and I had a brand new, never used, USCIS California service center issued I-94 to get back in. I had not even torn it off of the notice of action. After waiting in the cattle line of PFI, I got to an officer who told ...

I was on TN when we submitted H1B petition and, because of an RFE, we missed the cap for that year. In the several months that it took for H1B to be available and to be processed, I had to re-up my TN status. I did so by mail. With an H1B petition you usually ask for two things at the same time. The...

I would say that the majority of people who have TN status do live in the US. The process of obtaining a green card is fairly complex and is well articulated in several places on the internet. The most direct source of information is the BCIS website. I would suggest you read that first and then ask...

I haven't tried TN lately but I just applied for my 7th year extension of H1B and got an RFE asking for my passport. I have never had a passport and after 3 TNs and 3 H1B petitions, its only the second time I was asked. We submitted copies of my birth certificate and drivers license and the petition...
