Thanks nelsona. Two more wrinkles I would appreciate your input on: Let's say that I make 18K in RRSP contributions via payroll deduction in my company's plan but I deduct only 10K from my CDN return. For my US return, I am assuming that I would NOT be able to deduct any more than the 10K (converted...

When filling out Form 8833 as a result of reducing my Wages by my RRSP contributions (or, in my case, the $16.5K US max), what is the Internal Revenue Code that is overruled in this case (line 2)?

Deducting RRSP contributions on US return

Nelson, Dual citizen living and working in Canada. When I file my 2009 US return, I will deduct my contributions to my company-sponsored RRSP program from my wages on line 7 of my 1040 and file a 8833 to indicate my deduction. After reading the tech notes on the fifth protocol update to the treaty, ...

I'm not sure I fully understand. I file a form 1116 every year to claim credit for the taxes I pay on my CDN income. I usually wind up with excess US tax credits that I can't use on my US return. If I decide NOT to deduct my RRSP contribution from my taxable US income and claim any interest made unt...

Sorry, let me clarify. If I elect not to deduct my RRSP contributions from my US taxable income and further claim all gains that my RRSP makes (i.e. on my 8891), would I not be exempt from all US taxation on the RRSP once I begin withdrawals in Canada?

Now that the treaty update is complete, can I elect to make the contributions to my RRSP taxable, along with any gains, thereby delaying ALL taxation on my RRSP?

RRSP opened in 2008 for 2007. Do I need to file 8891 for 20

Dual citizen. Living/working in Canada since mid 2006. I decided to participate in my employer-sponsored RRSP in early 2008. I made a single lump-sum deposit that I am counting as an RRSP deduction on my 2007 CDN return. Since technically I did not own an RRSP at all in 2007, do I need to file an 88...

Best software for US and Canadian returns

I have always used H&R Block's TaxCut to do my US and CDN taxes (I am a dual-citizen living in Can). Unfortunately, due to IRS e-file restrictions, it is a real pain to try and enter CDN addresses into the 1040. This prevents me from e-filing my US taxes. Anyone know a way around this? Can I e-f...

Form 2555 negates child tax credit?

I have heard it said in this form that using Form 2555 or 2555-EZ makes one ineligible for the child tax credit. Would someone please tell me in what IRS publication and on what page it says this?
