Part year taxes
We moved from Ontario to Michigan mid year. While filing Canadian tax return , the tax software only generated federal tax return. Is there no Ontario return required because we were not residents in December 31?

Green card category
Hi - I am in the US on an L1A. I was in my managerial role in Canada for 8.5 months before moving to the US. My company is now beginning to start my green card application. I am not sure which category but they were talking about the PERM process. My country of birth is India and I have Canadian cit...

PFIC question
Hi, I am a Canadian citizen that transferred from Canada to the US. Since I am with the same employer I did not get any options to move out my RPP pension to a self directed locked-in type retirement account. As a result I am forced to choose between investments that are available in my employer’s b...

ITIN for kids on L2 to open 529 plan
Hi , I am in the US on an L1 visa with L2 dependents. I wanted to open 529 plans for my kids, but the application was asking for their SSN/ITIN. Since they are not eligible for an SSN, can I simply submit a W7 to apply for an ITIN? I don’t have a tax return to file it with, yet. So should I wait unt...

Roth IRA
Hi,
I just moved from Canada to the US this month. When can I contribute to a Roth IRA. Straightaway this year or do I have to wait, file taxes for 2024 next year to determine eligibility based on income and then only contribute from 2025 onwards?

Re: Year of transition taxes - Moving from Canada to US
Thank you, so might as well delay my departure to the US to sync with my wife after the house sale, and file as non resident in the US?

Year of transition taxes - Moving from Canada to US
Hi - I am moving from Ontario to Michigan around June/July and I am in a position to choose which country to be a resident for more than 183 days the tax year 2024. Does that make any substantial difference? I.e. filing as a non resident of Canada vs non resident of US for tax year 2024? My Canada h...

Re: Canadian Citizen moving to Michigan, plan to live in Windsor
Thank you both. Can someone confirm ND’s comment that I report only report US wages for days physically worked in the US? I might just have to work harder to convince my family to move with me, LOL

Re: Canadian Citizen moving to Michigan, plan to live in Windsor
Hi - I am in a similar situation. Canadian citizen, own a home in Ontario with family planning to stay back. I got a job in Michigan which is hybrid, so I will probably have some sort of residence there but plan to work from home/Ontario for more than 183 days a year. Will I be non resident for US t...
