Our brokerage account *is* a joint account. I am the primary account holder. But does this mean she would have to claim 50% of the gain and I would not claim any in the US if I file dual status?

Won't this raise flags for the IRS since not reporting this gain is kind of a loophole to begin with?

One complication I have is this: We have a stock that was sold 1 week after we moved to Canada. The capital gains on this are substantial enough that it requires some consideration: around 20K. If we file joint full year returns in the US, then we'll have to put this 20K on our tax return. But if we...

Moved to Canada - my wife is American

We moved from US to Canada in June 2006. My wife is American. I'm Canadian. I lived in US for 5 years on H1B visa. We both worked in the US in the first half of 2006. I worked in Canada in the last half of the year. She did not work in last half of year. We bought a house in Canada. And we have 1 ch...

Visitor Visa and Taxation

Hi There,

My wife is a US citizen and we just moved to Canada. She has a visitor visa right now. Does she have to fill out a Canadian tax return for this year if she is on this visa, or only after she attains permanent residency?

Bringing Stuff Back

When bringing a US car into Canada, is there any difference in how things work if you are Canadian or American? I'm Canadian, my wife is American. Same question for household goods. Its my understanding that many household items such as furniture are not even subject to duty or tax, correct? I'm jus...

immigration status

Hi There,

I really don't know where to begin with all this. I am Canadian. My wife is American and our baby was born in America. And I'm moving back to Canada.

Eventually, i would like my wife and baby to become Canadian.

What do I need to do? Where do I begin?

Bank Accounts and Credit Cards

If I move back to Canada with my American wife, can I/she keep our bank accounts and CDs and stocks and credit cards? Generally speaking, what sort of accounts do we have to close?

And once we are in Canada, can we still buy American CDs, etc.?

Thanks.

housing sale - moving to canada

My wife (American) is moving to Canada with me (Canadian). She owns a vacation property in the United States. If she sells it after we move to Canada, will she have to pay capital gains in the United States or Canada?

Since my wife is American, how difficult would it be for me to get a green card later if I decide to move back to the united states from canada?

Don't forget that it is very wise for YOU to take out US citizenship if/when you are eligible before returning to Canada, thus avoiding problems later on if you should decide to want to return to US after living in Canada. It is very difficult to maintain one's Green card when living outside US for...

Canadian citizenship for US wife

Hi there,

I am Canadian. My wife is American. What happens if we move back to Canada? Does she immediately become a landed immigrant or is this a complicated process that takes a while to resolve? Also wondering the same thing about our baby (born in US).

Thanks,

Medical

Hi There,

I am a canadian citizen living in the US. I am thinking of returning to Canada and I heard that i will not be eligible for Canadian Medical for 90 days. If this is true, does anybody know how much it costs to buy private medical insurance to cover me in the meantime?

Thanks,

Housing Confusion

Hi There, I am in a somewhat complicated situation. My wife is American. I am Canadian. We live in the US right now. She owns a rental property in the US. We want to sell it and buy a similar rental property, but in Canada, and use the 1030 thing to offset the capital gains. My question is: What hap...
