Re: 1040 XXV(1) with 8833

Thank you Nelsona, I had indeed misunderstood your advice. In the end of the day the IRS rejected my electronic filing under error that my spouse's birthday was incorrect (which was not) so I'm paper filing. I hope it all goes well, I couldn't have done it without your help and the myriad of informa...

Re: 1040 XXV(1) with 8833

I ended up trying taxact and it seems to be MUCH better than TurboTax for my situation (5W2s for 5 different states), much simpler and really made a difference on my refund vs owed taxes. I think TurboTax did not understand I wasn't a resident in ANY of the states I actually worked. So thanks Nirvan...

Re: 1040 XXV(1) with 8833

Thank you both! I know this is a childish question but I'm trying to break away from my current accountant that has been lying on my forms about the number of days I spend in the US for work. So, I know the 1040NR has be be filed in paper form but if I'm filing the 1040 can I use a software like Tur...

Re: 1040 XXV(1) with 8833

Wow, I certainly did! Have been running simulations on tax softwares as I'm in the exact same situation and it's driving me crazy. I just have one question, if OP allows me to hijack his thread, with the 1040NR I do not need to claim in the US the small income from a rented house in Canada but if I ...

RRSP x Traditional IRA x 401K CDN nonresident alien working in the USA

- I was advised to contribute to a traditional IRA or 401K in the USA as opposed to RRSP as the contribution would "count" to reduce CDN AND USA tax as opposed to RRSP which would only reduce tax owed in Canada. Does that sound right? If I earned USD80K and contributed 10K to 401k would my...

Re: Canadian travel Nurse, meets Substantial Presence but no perm address in the US

Thank you so much for your reply. It does clarify a lot. I do maintain a full home in Canada with all my personal belongings and not rented as my son still occupies his room while going to school. I would never dispute Canadian residency and am happy to pay taxes there. It was the amount of days liv...

Canadian travel Nurse, meets Substantial Presence but no perm address in the US

Hi, So I'm a Canadian travel nurse and only work in the USA for the last 3 years. Over 300 days per year hence meeting Substantial Presence Test but ALL my ties are in Canada ie. Drivers License, mortgage on house paying utilities, car insurance/plates. I have no permanent address in the US as I mov...
