Re: Transferring RRSP While Non-Resident

Hey Chelavnzuo, did you ever find a bank that would let you transfer your RRSP while a non-resident? I tried three with no dice. I've basically given up at this point, but thought I'd ask if you had any breakthroughs before I start selling stocks.

Selling House on F-1 or Green Card

Here's a tricky question: I'm a 2nd year PhD student, Canadian citizen, living in North Carolina for the duration of my PhD (4 more years). My wife is a dual Can / US citizen. We bought a house when we moved down here. Recognizing that getting a Green Card can take a couple years, I'm starting to th...

Re: Transferring RRSP While Non-Resident

Yeah maybe. But if I cash it in I'm paying something like 20 to 30 % tax on it.

Re: Transferring RRSP While Non-Resident

It was specifically it was a no to opening an RRSP investing account while a resident of US.

It seems like there may be a possibility of opening a regular savings RRSP in which you cannot trade, which is the route I'm exploring now.

Re: Transferring RRSP While Non-Resident

I got a hard no from TD Direct today saying that they have recently changed their rules on this issue. I wonder, nelsona, if you made the transfer before the rules changed.

My next possibility is transferring into a regular bank RRSP savings type account, which apparently might have less regulations.

Re: Transferring RRSP While Non-Resident

That's very helpful, thanks nelsona. Chelavnzo, by frozen I mean they have stopped me from making any buys. I can still sell ETFs/stocks. That's a bit unfortunate that they want you to go to Canada for this. That will be tricky for me if they ask the same. I have no plans to go to Canada until May o...

Re: Transferring RRSP While Non-Resident

Chelavnzuo, it seems to me at this point that it is up to the broker whether they want to register with particular states. My contact at Questrade informed me after consultation w/ various higher ups that the reason Questrade was freezing me was simply that they weren't "registered" w/ Nor...

Re: Transferring RRSP While Non-Resident

Shoot. I was planning on trying TD in the coming days. I'll let you know if I stumble on a bank that does allow it.

Transferring RRSP While Non-Resident

Hello, I have a problem with my RRSP. I moved to North Carolina from Canada a year and a half ago with the understanding I could keep my RRSP for the duration of my 6 year stay in NC. However, a few months ago, Questrade locked my RRSP and told me to remove all funds. I had a long email exchange wit...

Re: Trading in my RRSP while in the US

Thanks for the help so far. So PL09 you are saying that buying within the RRSP IS considered a 'taxable event,' or you're not sure? Nelsona, I had thought when you said "activity within the RRSP" being non-taxable that you were referring to all activity, including buying. But were you only...

Trading in my RRSP while in the US

Hello, I am a Canadian citizen, and I recently started my PhD in North Carolina. I plan to cut residential ties with Canada after this tax year, but will remain a Canadian citizen of course. I have a Canadian RRSP through Questrade that I did not empty. I understand that while living in the USA it i...
