Re: FEIE - increasing my tax burden?

@skobes : how would all the tax be reclaimed by FTC? I thought there is a limit on the amount of FTC per person on the return.. or did I mis read that on one of the posts on this forum? I've posted a more detailed question over here: https://forums.serbinski.com/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=13335 This ye...

Conflicting opinions from IRS/forum/h&r - Left USA mid year for Canada.

So, after reading a bunch of posts about dual status filing, and Nelsona's responses to my post, and H&R Block, I decided to contact IRS about how to file for 2018. Here are the facts: 2016 days in US: 365 2017 Days in US: 365 2018 Days in US: 160 (Moved to Canada in 2018) 1. F1 students (both h...

Re: FEIE - increasing my tax burden?

Thanks. I'll start from the beginning. Btw, to file 1116, I should know exactly how much taxes I will have paid CRA, right? and for the gross income, am I including contributions to RRSP, CPP, EI, etc from the Canadian side?

Re: FEIE - increasing my tax burden?

Hey Nelson, as always thanks for taking the time respond. I misworded my original post. I mean to say that I'm including all our income (income made in USA from US employer, income made in Canada from US employer, income made by consulting for a US company while living in canada, and income made fro...

FEIE - increasing my tax burden?

I moved from USA to Canada last year. I was a resident alien of USA in 2018. I'm filing the 1040 joint return with the intention of excluding any self-employment income (consulting work for US client) and Canadian employer income we made after we moved to Canada. I'm using TurboTax to file our taxes...

Re: Is FBAR Required in my case?

Also, I'm not sure how to file Canadian taxes if I claim to be resident of USA. I'm posting my We (myself and my spouse) were resident aliens (for tax purposes) until June 2018 on a F1 visa. We left USA and moved to Canada in June 2018 (less than 183 days in 2018), established a home in Canada. We a...

Re: Is FBAR Required in my case?

Hey nelson, Thanks for taking the time to reply. While I’m tempted to do that, I moved to Canada and started my own business which has had some income since I started it. To start the business I declared myself as a resident of Canada (which I am, A PR). Not sure how claiming to be a resident of USA...

Forgot to include that we'll also be filing form 8840 (closer connection statement) to indicate that we terminated our residency on the day we moved from USA to Canada.

Dual Status Return

A little background first: We (myself and my spouse) were resident aliens (for tax purposes) until June 2018 on a F1 visa. We left USA and moved to Canada in June 2018 (less than 183 days in 2018), established a home in Canada. We aren't citizens of either USA or Canada and do not have dependents. H...
