Not sure why would be different for Ontario vs federal tuition credit, but have you considered that tuition credits must be deducted in the first year that they can be used against income? Can you explain the advantages and disadvantages of contributing to a 401k when also contributing to RRSP while temporarily in the US and unsure of the return date to Canada?

What if OP was to return to US periodically for work, perhaps would remain a NR due to low number of days, would he still require payroll arrangement?
Also how does a payroll company solve this difficulty?

I do have a primary residence in Canada for which I am paying a mortgage and not renting. I have family in Canada as well, and return frequently.
