Help with filing Section 217 return

Post by Rabadash »

I'm a Canadian who has been living in the US for 20 years, filing US returns jointly with my wife. Unemployed, I collapsed one of my three RRSPs in 2014 (about CAD $80,000 before 25% withholding), with no other individual world income in 2014. What is involved in filing a Section 217 return? Thanks!

I can tell you that a 217 return won't help you in your case. The breakpoint at which you would get any many back is about 55K, and that is with absolutely no other income, and a fair amount of medical expenses.

But, in terms of doing it, simply log on to ufile, and set up a 217 elective return and start filling it.
