W4 vs Form 8233

Post by futtake »

I am in the US on TN status.

For 2015 I will be a tax resident of Ontario Canada and a non-resident alien of Washington state.

I am wondering if I should be filling out a W-4 with my employer or Form 8233?

I will be filing an exit tax return with Canada for 2015 and a 1040NR with the us govt for 2015.

Thanks,

Philip

Are you an employee of the comapnyt or simply a contractor? Employees fil a w-4 for withholding. They are not exempt from withholding.

You will not be considered a tax resident of ontario for all of 2015, or you would not be able to file an exit return.

When did you move to US?

I am an employee so it seems I would completing a W4.

I moved to the US in October of 2015. I do have TFSA and other savings in Canada that I was planning on liquidating before 2016.
