retaining 401k investments in Canada

Post by steadgarwin »

I have a 401k plan with a brokerage window, which allows the typical full range of US investments -- mutual funds, etfs, stocks, whatever. If I retire in Canada, should I expect to be able to continue to trade all types of securities in this account? I ask because other posts indicate normal (non-retirement) accounts have issues with this. thanks!

While allowable by regulation, It is entirely up to the brokerage to decide if they wish to keep you as a foreign client.
Some ask their clients to move elsewhere, insisting on a US address (never fake a residence).
You would want to find this out well BEFORE leaving US.
