Canadian Commuter to US

Post by mayanajia »

Hello,

I have a very basic understanding of taxes and have a few questions as we have a new change in our lives and we would appreciate any help we can get.

My husband and I are both Canadian citizens living in Windsor, ON. My husband is starting a new job in Detroit, MI and will be commuting there daily. I work in Windsor.

1. Do we have to file taxes jointly in the US? Is there a benefit to filing jointly? Does this depend on my income in Canada?

2. As a non-resident of the US, does my husband still need to purchase a health plan in the US in order to not be penalized come tax time?

3. After filing in the US, how much should we save to pay Canadian taxes? Since this depends on income, does someone know where to find charts of the percentage of taxes in both countries?

If anyone is able to help, i can give more details in a private message if needed

Thank you!
