Just got 2 bills from the IRS for 2009 and 2010 taxes...

Post by looking4advice »

As a US citizen in Canada I filed 6 years of returns and fbars (2005-2010) in December 2011. Last week I received 2 bills from the IRS for taxes, penalties, and interest for 2009 and 2010. The returns I filed all had $0 owing.

I looked at the reason they gave and it said for 2009 and 2010 I had given an invalid social security number for my US citizen daughter and the claim for her was being denied. That error triggered the tax and penalties.

It turns out my accountant had her SSN correct for my 2005, 2006, 2007, and 2008 returns but somehow scrambled her SSN on the 2009 and 2010 returns. I called the irs and corrected the numbers. I was told that the balance was now $0 :D . When I asked about the 2005-2008 returns I was told the balance for all was $0 as well.

What I want to know is if this is the end of dealing with the 2005-2010 returns or could they still be opened up for audit? I know about the 3 year statute of limitations but figure at some point they get closed and that's it.

can't you just call IRS lo correct SSN ? I guess it was a human error caught up by a machine -:)

I did call the irs and got it all corrected. That's when they said the new balance was $0.

What I want to know is if this is the end of dealing with these returns or can they still be audited.

Yes, a correction extens the audit period. but iwould not be worried about that, since anytime you amend a return, the IRS takes a closer look at your return. If they hasd found a problem, they would have told you.
