Canadian PR Commuter 401k etc..

Post by canpr »

Hi,

Iam not a US Citizen. I currently work in US. I have Canadian PR and planning to move to Canada. For work, I will commute to US from Canada.

1)What should I do with my 401k. Can I leave it as it is?

Even after I move to Canada,

2)Can I contribute to 401K, IRA in US?

3)Buy US stocks, mutual funds through my brokerage account in US.

4)Any other items I should take care before I move from US.

Thanks.

1) you can leave it, butr be sure to find a US broker that will accept you having it after you leave US./
2) No.
3) No. You must have a broker licensed in your province.
4) Consider putting all your pension into a Roth, BEFORE leaving US, paying the tax over the next 2 years

If you are looking for a broker/firm that can handle IRA's/401Ks for Canadian residents, Darrell Thompson at Macquarie Private Wealth Corp. in Toronto is licensed to do business in most provinces and 28 different states. He can be reached at darrell.thompson@macquarie.com.
